Comic group folder: The Request

Chapter 1 by MSSeymour Request...Pg 10 by MSSeymour Request...Pg 21 by MSSeymour

Every once and a while we find ourselves in a bit of a pickle and how fortunate it is to be able to have someone help us out. When that happens, we can just thank them and get on with our lives right? Right? Right?

...

Not according to this fox spirit demon! The Request is a funny tale of Reikiko; a young girl who learns that trading one misfortune for another can sometimes be a heavy burden. When she is attacked while visiting her grandmother's grave, she is saved by something incredible. It seems a fox-demon had heard her plea and decided to dash out to save her but after all the commotion, he seemed to linger on... and follow poor Reikiko home. Now she has a demon quite literally on her hands but is there more to this story than just a chance encounter?

The first thing that hit me about this comic was how well it paces itself. MSSeymour took the time to set the mood and pace of the story at the beginning (as well as a those lovely backgrounds) and then ambush us with action! The overall speed of the comic is very well balanced as well, taking time to inform us of the story & entertain with the awkwardness of the situation. I think we all love a good odd couple (and this one is fairly odd) but it's my prediction that we will learn to love their quirks. The banter is especially fun and I think many laughs are on the way! The art style is very particular as well and has a signature that doesn't allow confusion with other artists. Yonma (the fox demon) has a ghost-like air to him that makes him seem quite elegant until he opens his mouth. lol

We still have so much to learn from this story but the chemistry is just right, the pace is great and I encourage you to take a look! From what I've gathered, much, much more is on the way!

Words from the artist:

The Request started as a pet-project to blow off steam after a long day. I find a lot of enjoyment in art, but this is the first original comic that I have attempted to make, and I am happy to say that after a brief break it has picked up again. I will keep this comic going for my own personal satisfaction, but reader interest (and comments!) definitely help my pen move a little faster. In another note, many web comics are colored, but I made my decision to keep this comic a black and white for two reasons: (1) for the more traditional manga feel and (2) because the main characters are naturally colored black and white!

As for my inspiration, I honestly haven’t read a lot of manga (still not sure I’m doing it right), so my inspiration comes mainly from anime. I have always found kitsune fascinating and oh-so-much fun to draw. You may say that I wanted to create a comic somewhere between Yu Yu Hakusho and Kamisama Hajimemashita, which both guys and girls could relate to, with strong-willed male and female characters. Be assured, there are many more interesting characters to come, as well as loads more chapters. This will be a long project! But if you are interested in youkai of various sorts (especially foxes), the legend of the dragons, and a brief historical interlude with samurai, then I’m sure The Request will have plenty for you to wrap your mind around!

Aww, thanks! Hug That's a lovely feature.
Your summary is so poetic I'm wondering if I shouldn't have just left you in charge of the synopsis business ;) (Wink)
